The drivetrain (also called the powertrain or the driveline) is the system of intermediary components that sit between the engine and the wheels.
The purpose of the drivetrain is to moderate power. Power isn’t transmitted directly from the engine to the wheels. That would make that engine power difficult to regulate.
Let’s say, for example, you want to reverse your vehicle. The rotational direction of the engine doesn’t change. It keeps rotating normally. It’s the gearbox that “tells” the tires to rotate backward instead of forward.
These “instructions” are relayed via the complex mechanical components of the drivetrain. The same goes for things like cornering. Thus the importance of a properly functioning drivetrain cannot be overstated.
Drivetrains wear out over time. In case yours starts to act up our technicians can rebuild it as good as new in record time so your heavy equipment can keep working for you and pay itself off.
Parts of the drivetrain:
These components include the driveshaft, CV joints, differential, axle shafts and U-joints.
The Universal Joint (U-joint) is a rotating joint that allows the multidirectional transfer of power from the driveshaft to the wheels. This allows the wheels to rotate on multiple fronts. Forward, backward, and sideways.
Constant Velocity (CV) joints, on the other hand, as their name implies, help the wheels rotate at the same speed. This helps prevent a situation where one wheel is rotating faster than others and “dragging” them along.
Differentials are the final link between the driveshaft and the wheels. Differentials are a set of gears that translate motion to the axles.
Most vehicles have one set differential. All Wheel Drive vehicles have two sets of differentials for the front and rear axles. This setup allows each wheel to be rotated independently. This helps in some things like getting out of a muddy pit.
The rotation of axle shafts is what turns the wheels. They are connected directly to the differential.
Heavy Equipment Repair Services Charleston services, repairs, and rebuilds drivetrains for any kind of heavy machinery.
The driveshaft connects the wheels to the transmission. This is the lever that actually makes the wheels turn.
Clutches are the “switches” that connect and disconnect engine power to and from the driveshaft. Like all moving parts, they get worn down or get damaged during operation and need repairs.
Differentials are the final link between the driveshaft and the wheels. Differentials are a set of gears that translate motion to the axles.
For proper operation, see to it that your differentials are regularly inspected and serviced. If they develop issues, call us.
